Recently we have been in contact with a young missionary in Bujumbura,
Burundi,  (the capital) who gave us a brief sketch of the spiritual condition of the
church and the nation.  Stephen Kuert is with the Assemblies of God and grew
up in Kenya where his parents are still missionaries.

He suggested prayer for the Church in the area of Unity.  There is also the
issue of Islam.  Without further ado, I'm posting a portion of his email.  Keep
Stephen and the nation of Burundi in your prayers.  Amy@FHGI

"I have been in the country about 6 weeks so far.  I am learning a lot about this
place. It is a very interesting country. In short, it is its own little world- extremely
different from anything else I have found in other East African countries.  I am
living in the capital city right now - Buja.  So far I have been involved in language
acquisition, teaching at a little Bible school, and doing some youth ministry at
the local AG church here.

Prayer?  I would say the major issue in the country is a lack of genuine unity
anywhere.  From the political realm to the spiritual realm unity is almost an
unheard of reality.
The country has been so deeply divided due to the war that
people no longer trust anyone or anything.  In my opinion, this is the dying need
of Burundi. Churches spring up over night here - not from intentional church
planting strategies I might add  -  So and so got angry with so and so and
decided to split the church..... Just about everyone is a split of one of the major
churches in the country.  Kind of sad.

Another major concern is the growing tide of Islam in the country.  The
Islamic agenda is making a major push for political influence.  Their primary
champion, the former president of the ruling party made a very heavy bid to
make Burundi an Islamic state.  He was arrested by several of the military
leaders and encarcerated.  However, he was well on his way to accomplishing
his goal.  This spirit is very much alive and active here.

Politically things are tense here right now.  The first major fighting in over a year
occurred last week.  Over 20 were killed.  We are all praying for peace to prevail
and for the current president to regain favor in the sight of the people.
"

Sincerely,
Stephen Kuert  9/10/2007

UPDATE:  3/23/08  ANDY HAS BEEN IN CONTACT WITH STEPHEN...and will be
meeting him in Bujumbura. He and his co-worker, Jim, have graciously agreed
to introduce Andy to various pastors and help him to acclimate.  Continue to
pray for the work there to develop.  This is definitely a Joshua-Caleb Journey,
spying out the land, for Andy.  I will post more as info becomes available.  Amy

UPDATE:  4/14/08  3 Days to Go!!!  Opportunities are increasing but please be
in prayer for Stephen
who is sick and may need to go home to Kenya to
recuperate.  As I posted on the blog yesterday,  a young Christian man named
Olivier, age 30,  will be Andy's translator.  "He loves Jesus and is a solid
preacher who God is using in pretty incredible ways".

Olivier is arranging meetings with business men in Bujumbura for April 21-25
in the mornings.  He also suggested high school and university ministry
opportunities in the afternoons.

Olivier also would like to arrange meetings in Muyinga on April 26-27 and
Rutovu, the 'source du nil' or source of the Nile, on May 1-2.
Please pray also that God would bless this brother for his time, bless his family
and whatever else the Holy Spirit lays on your heart.
